One cannabis joint as bad as five cigarettes
Smoking one cannabis joint is as harmful to a person's lungs as having up to five cigarettes, according to research published on Tuesday. The study found only those who smoked tobacco suffered from the crippling lung disease emphysema, but cannabis use stopped the lungs working properly. Those who smoked cannabis damaged both the lungs' small fine airways, used for transporting oxygen, and the large airways, which blocked air flow. It meant cannabis smokers complained of wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. The researchers said "The extent of this damage was directly related to the number of joints smoked, with higher consumption linked to greater incapacity." In addition, The British government is considering whether cannabis should be reclassified as a more serious drug. (Source: Reuters 8/1/07)The British government shifted cannabis from being a Class B drug to a Class C drug three years ago. It's not rare at all to see a person smoking joints abroad. Those pot smokers usually say moderate intake of cannabis is good for your health and it's not proven that cannabis causes specific health hazards. Even if you see no harm in it now, taking just one puff is obviously the road to ruin your lifestyle. In fact, now experts say smoking joints does have the specific health risk. You might not like this idea, but I would say you have to pay the price for your actions, let's say, being nicely stoned, in the end and it could be your health risks. Incidentally, although marijuana does have healthy benefits, when used for medicinal purposes, a recent study found that it increases psychosis risk. Be cautious!
